Access Denied

Even though some areas in a Nancy Drew game are not relevant to explore for the sake of the mystery, I still want to walk around the areas and explore. Nancy Drew games give me a reason to explore, and I love discovering new environments and areas to do so. Some of the areas I wish I could have accessed (which are denied exploring areas) include the library balconies. Like this one from Curse of Blackmoor Manor:
Or this one in Warnings at Waverly Academy:
Or especially in Treasure in the Royal Tower:
What areas do you wish you could have explored further, just because?
We have some birthdays to celebrate!

Ah yes. I don’t think I noticed the ones in TRT or CUR… But I did notice the second floor in WAC.
I wish we could have gone down that tunnel thing in the boiler room in Secrets Can Kill. It may not be useless and I don’t know why but it would be cool to see what’s down there.
The chairs next to the stage on the second floor in The Final Scene (how do you get up there if the only stairs is to the balcony, the other side of the second floor chairs section).
Getting into the locked drawer in Stay Tuned for Danger. I think this is the first game Nancy ever said “it’s locked.” Oh and the second floor of the WWB Network studio.
I think that’s all I can think of. Maybe we get to explore lots of locations in Midnight in Salem? Or the next game? I like how in Treasure in a Royal Tower, you get to explore a lot of the castle, and I like how we can explore through the woods in Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake and The Captive Curse.
I never even noticed the balconies in CUR, i thought that was just the back wall! I wish we got to look around the walkway outside the museum in LIE, and got to see the rest of the castle in HAU (sans fade-to-black cutaways)
In Shadow at the Water’s Edge, I wished Nancy could have gone on the balcony instead of just peeking out of her room to look outside. Also, exploring more of the stage in Labyrinth of Lies and the lab in Deadly Device.
Hi, my friend Heidi turned 15 today. Could she get a shout out maybe tomorrow?
You bet!
Curse of Blackmore Manor library for sure!
I spent SO much time on my first ND game Stay Tuned for Danger and that drawer in Mattie’s house drove me NUTS!!! I was disappointed to find out when I finally solved it that it was accessible in a prior design but then changed but they let it still be clickable with Nancy saying “It’s Locked”, thereby confusing us.
Also, I was surprised to find Waverly’s library mostly restricted; I felt like it wasn’t enough in comparison to other games.
I was hoping to be able to explore more places in Alibi, especially since it was set in Nancy’s own town. I know a lot people were a bit disappointed by that.
But don’t get me wrong, the environments in the games are beautifully designed and “so rich in detail” (Hotchkiss).
Any place that is “off limits” or that looks like it contains something great. 😀
I had no idea the library in Curse of Blackmoor Manor had a second story… I always thought they were just really tall bookcases where you needed a ladder to get to them… lol
I would have liked to explore more of Nancy’s house in Alibi In Ashes. It would have been so cool if you could go into Nancy’s kitchen and make snacks and stuff. I also would have liked to see Nancy’s bedroom in Trail Of The Twister and Sea Of Darkness. But, even without those areas to explore, your Nancy Drew Games are totally awesome!
Alibi In Ashes, that would have been so great if you could go to other places. It drove me nuts because you were able to click on things on the map and get annoying sound effects, but were never able to actually go.
As nice as it would be to explore these areas, Nancy Drew games aren’t really about exploration. Sure, there is a bit of exploration but the focus is always on puzzles, story and characters. Let’s be honest, would you rather have a few more places to explore if it meant there was lackluster puzzles, no story and no characters?
That said, I wouldn’t mind a bit more exploring or optional content. I mean, besides character dialogue, ester eggs and achievements you’ll see everything in a Nancy Drew game in just an average play through with no optional content. It would be cool if you could unlock a hidden area like the above in which you could find some a clue to one of the puzzles or a funny bit of writing/secret character/minigame.
