Friends on the Case: From Payphones to Nancy’s Mobile Phone
Getting to know Nancy’s closest friends with her phone calls gives players a way to be part of Nancy’s larger world from case to case, since the main friends are recurring characters. The original 1998 release of Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill introduced, for the first time in a video game, her friends Bess Marvin, Bess’ cousin George Fayne, and Ned Nickerson. But, there was no “Nancy” handheld mobile phone to contact them. She had to call her best friends for help through a payphone in the school, where she used Aunt Eloise’s phone card while on the case in Florida.
If you are a longtime fan of the Nancy Drew games this will make sense, but if you are newer to the games and are a digital native – yes, there was a time when Nancy did not have a mobile phone with the ability to call her friends and family with the swipe of a screen! In games 1-7, phone calls were an important part of the gameplay, but they were mainline phones designed to be found in the game world. The PC release of game 8, Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel, revealed Nancy’s mobile phone as an important part of her investigations, putting her network of friends, family, and contacts at the player’s fingertips… just a click away.
For over 30 years, players have been able to play as Nancy, getting to know the character and how she solves a case. Selecting friends to call on the phone for added case insights or just to chat makes the gameplay more immersive as players delve into the relationships that are part of the world of Nancy Drew. The stories in each of the 34 games create connections with Nancy’s friends and family between the cases, and every new mystery game in the series becomes another chapter in the exciting world of detective Nancy Drew.
