WINDOWS 10 – GAME INSTALLATION

This post gives instructions on how to install an older game disc onto Windows 10.

Please use the following instructions when trying to install on Windows 10

Make sure you’re logged on as an Administrator for your computer, temporarily disable your anti-virus protection (make sure to re-enable your anti-virus protection after the game download is complete), and manually install by taking the following steps:

  1. Go to your Documents folder and create a new folder. Name the folder with the title of the game.
  2. If installing from disc, insert game Disc 1 in your disc drive. Go to Start Menu > Computer Noteif installing from digital download skip steps 2 and 3.
  3. Right-click your CD-Rom/DVD drive and choose Open.
  4. Look for the Setup file (this file will display as Setup Application, Setup.exe, or Setup Launcher Installshield). Double-click this file to start the installation process.
  5. Move through the install process until you reach Choose Destination Location. Click the Browse button or Change button.
  6. Navigate to the game folder you created by double-clicking in the Directories box. Select C: drive > Users > User name > Documents > the game folder you created. When you have the correct Path,

choose OK.

  1. Continue forward with the installation process. When asked if you want to install DirectX, check “No, I will install myself.”
  2. Upon completion, click finish and exit setup.

You may also need to (specifically for games 3-5):

  1. Right-click the game icon that is now on your desktop, select ‘Properties’.
  2. Under ‘Properties’, click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab.
  3. Check the ‘Run in Compatibility Mode’ box and then select ‘Windows 98/Me’ from the drop-down menu.

Trying to install 14 last train to blue moon canyon on Windows 10. Tried the above instructions but it only gets to 13% and then says it successfully completed the install and to click finish. When I click finish it prompts me to put in 2nd disc. When I do that, it seems like it’s continuing the install but there’s no progress bar. Then the window disappears and when I put disc one in again to play it gives me an error and says it can’t find the path

  3. Alice says:

I am trying to install Alibi in Ashes from a two-pack with The Deadly Device on Windows 10. I go through all the steps and it shows the progress bar filling up about 90% and then stopping. It won’t go past this point, and I have waited for hours. I have restarted the setup, and nothing changes.

  6. Keith says:

I’ve been battling to get a couple of old games installed on win 10. For example, Red Alert 2, where I bought the CD ROM game. When I follow your guidance, having temporarily turned off Avast, right clicked on the setup file to open as an administrator, I receive the following message: “Windows cannot access the sepecified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them.” Any further advice would be gratefully recieved.

I’ve been trying to get White Wolf of Icicle Creek to install for Windows 10, but I keep getting a data error (cyclic redundancy check) about 10% into the installation. I followed most of the steps in the walkthrough, although it never asked me to install DirectX.

I have also bought the alibi in ashes and deadly device combo pack and it stops downloading about 90% while I try to install it on my up to date windows 10 computer. Seems like other people have had similar problems is there any possible way to actually installing it or is this some kind of joke? You’re saying email you but you havent given any kind of answer on this forum. Looks like I’ve wasted my money.

  21. Leah says:

Hi everyone! I’ve found that when installing these games on Windows 7, 8, and 10, you need to have everything closed (no programs running). Close your internet browser, everything. That has been the key for me (I’ve tried installing with everything shut down except for my browser with these instructions and it didn’t work until I closed the browser), so print out these instructions and then close every program except the installer.

    • Kaylee says:

Thank you so much!! I tried to install it and was waiting for an hour for it to load. Then exited out of my Internet and it worked in 3 seconds! I’m so excited!!

  28. April Averette says:

I had the game for a while on my old PC. It was Windows 7, and now I have a new PC and it is Windows 10. I’ve tried several times to install the game and it won’t work. It goes through the entire installation process and finishes installing but never shows up on my desktop or anywhere else. But, when I go to settings and open the uninstall/modify apps thing, it shows up there for some reason. It won’t show up anywhere else so I’m unable open and play the game. I’m getting very frustrated because I’ve been playing this game for a long time and it reminds me of my childhood!!! I want to start playing it again so badly. Please help. The game is called “MySims” and it is not supposed to have a space in the title in case you were wondering.

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hello April! We can help you with any of our Nancy Drew games’ installation issues if you email us at techsupport@herinteractive.com. If you are having trouble with “MySims” I recommend contacting that company’s tech support on their web site.

  29. Shannon says:

I’m trying to install Nancy Drew: Labyrinth of Lies. I inserted the disk and it’s completely blank. There is no set up files, nothing. Just an empty disk. Trying to autorun just gives me this message:
    D:\
    The directory name is invalid.

  32. OC says:

I bought a couple of the games on Steam recently and am running Windows 10. I did all the requisite updates to DirectX and tried all kinds of compatibility settings, but the game is still whining about me not having DirectX. I also tried to instructions on your page for installing DirectX. Is there something specific Steam users can do?

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hello OC, double-check your computer specs with the game specs listed on Steam or our web site. If you see no big differences and it appears compatible, please contact us at techsupport@herinteractive.com and we can help you further. Thanks!

  33. Kelley says:

I installed Treasure in the Royal Tower and I have done about everything I can do on my computer to get it to work. I don’t know if I should uninstall the game or try a different game. I’m completely clueless about what to do next.

  34. Kelley says:

I tried to install Curse of Blackmoor Manor and I did everything above and it still didn’t work. Any Ideas?

  35. Elizabeth says:

So I have one of the double disks (Two games in one disk) Phantom of Venice and Haunting of Castle Malloy. I put the disk in and it say’s it has to set up some kind of anit-virus wall (Thingy) first, I click install and it takes a while to download. Then after the next window popped up saying it will download the the two games. that instantiation finishes. But then nothing happens, no short cut icons appear on my desktop. nothing. the windows close and nothing happens.

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hi Elizabeth! There is a chance you need to disable your anti-virus to let the game install. If you still have trouble after trying this, let us know in an email to techsupport@herinteractive.com.

      • Elastigirl says:

It has nothing to do with the anti-virus. The 2003 software isn’t compatible with Windows 10. To fix this, right click setup.exe, and then select “Program Compatibility.” Run it as Windows XP (any service pack).

  36. Rose says:

OK so I have a game program that allows me to download multiple games, and I recently downloaded Nancy Drew Curse of Blackmoor Manor, and it keeps telling me that I am missing a different program.

  37. Bethany says:

Alright, so I am downloaded Nancy Drew The Creature of Kapu Cave and it downloads, but when I try to play it, it keeps saying I don’t have disk one in except I do. So I did what the instructions above say and now it wont read the game at all.

  38. Sarah says:

Ok, so I was able to install Stay Tuned for Danger on windows 10 but at the end it says it is unable to play sound because they have changed the way sound is played and tells me to restart the game, but when i do that, and try to click the icon, it repeats the same message. I also have games 1(revised), 3-6, 8-11, 13-14, 16-27, and 29-32, and they all work fine. What do I need to do to get the game working?

  39. Tino says:

Got Nancy Drew 4 Pack on Amazon, downloads but says Nancy Drew Engine has stopped when I start it up, and closes out. Any idea what to do?

  40. Sarah says:

I have windows 10 on my laptop. Just purchased the 2 pack of Ghost of Thornton Hall and The Shattered Medallion. At first it wouldn’t even launch the installation at all. Now I got it to go through most of the install for ghost of Thornton Hall. It stopped about 90% of the way done. It’s just sort of sitting here for a long time. Any ideas on what to do differently?

  41. LU says:

Help! It’s demanding for directx9. I can’t even finish installing.

  42. Nita says:

Do you have better luck getting older Nancy Drew games installed properly when the game is digitally downloaded from herinteractive? I can see that many people have issues installing physical copies.

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hello Nita, the problem isn’t entirely with physical or digital games, it’s with how old the game is. As long as the user installs according to the additional help in the FAQ posts, all the games we have to offer will work on newer computers.

    • Okiegirl81 says:

I have 3 nancy drew 2 packs and each one has 2 games on one disc. Im able to install and play everyone of em except tomb of the lost queen. Its the only game that gives me “data error: cyclic redundancy check” during the installation

  45. Serena says:

I am trying to download last train to blue moon canyon . It goes through all the steps to install it and it says it is downloaded successfully but it won’t let me play it. It says that was unable to find a direct x device. I have installed directx 11. It does this for all of 4-13.

  53. Bill says:

It is clear that there is a issue with running Her Interactive games on win10. Why is Her Interactive not working to resolve?

I continue to have issues loading every game I try installing on my daughters PC!

  54. Ashley says:

Hi there, I’ve been trying to install Message in a Haunted Mansion and it doesn’t give me any of the usual install pages. It only gives me the message “allow this to make changes to device” to which I choose allow and then a menu screen pops up giving me the option to “Modify, repair, or remove”. I have tried using modify, which it just states that the game is installed and sends me to a finish screen but does not allow for game play. I have also tried repair, which runs a task bar that seems to be loading information and files, then it sends me to a finish screen, which again does not allow for game play. I have not tried the remove button out of fear that it’ll erase the contents on the disk by accident. Is there anyway that you can help me resolve this problem. I remembered being so scared of this game as a young teen and id like to see how id hold up now as an adult. Thank you very much!

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hi Ashley! If you have the game disc, feel free to go ahead and choose “Remove” and let it uninstall completely. Then follow these above instructions when re-installing it. If you still have trouble, please email us at techsupport@herinteractive.com and let us know what’s happening on your machine. Thanks!

  55. Brendon Miller says:

Hello, I am trying to install the White Wolf of Icicle Creek AND Alibi in Ashes using the disks I just bought. It goes about half way and then stops. It says “Error, your device/hard drive is not ready.” What do I need to do so that I can download them?

  56. Sagun says:

  60. Colin says:

i went with the full disc installation and i ran into an error that says “This installation option requires 3417 m and only 2047m are available on the target drive. free up space or install to a location with more room” ….. i know i have enough space and i’m going to ignore the error. Am i doing the right thing?

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hi Colin, make sure to empty your trash/recycle bin on your computer, then try installing. You will need the 3414 MB to properly install the game. If you have trouble or any other questions, please contact us at techsupport@herinteractive.com. Thanks!

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hello Colin, make sure to empty your trash bin on your computer, then try installing again. If the error pops up, try installing on a different hard drive that has enough space.

  61. Beth says:

Hi, I’m trying to install one of the Nancy Drew games off of Shockwave.com, and it keeps telling me that DirectX hasn’t installed correctly. I have a Windows 10 laptop. What should I do?

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hi Beth, try contacting Shockwave’s tech support team for some help. If they can’t fix it, you can always order from our site. I’m not sure what causes their installer issue. 🙁

INSTALLING ALIBI IN ASHES ON WINDOWS 10,INSTALLS OK,PLAYS OK BUT AM NOT ABLE TO FIND
ARTICLES IN THE POLICE MAILBOX.CAN PUT THEM IN BUT THEY ARE NOT THERE FOR NANCY TO GET.

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hello Bill, if you believe this is a technical bug, please email us at techsupport@herinteractive.com and let us know about it. But check your task lists, talk to all characters, and see if Bess, Ned, or George have items in their inventory that they need to drop off in the police drop off bin, then phone call Nancy and switch to her to open the bin. If the items are not appearing, this sounds like a bug.

  63. I have tried emailing techsupport@herinteractive.com but I am not getting any Replies. The exact email I keep sending is

It installed fine, but now it won’t let me access it… Either it loads and loads until it just stops, or it says “Error, access to path denied”. Please help me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! I am trying to access Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek. I bought a 4 pack disk on Amazon. It includes The Secret of Shadow Ranch, Legend of the Crystal Skull, and Curse of Blackmoor Manor. I am using Windows 10. The error message says “Please report the following error to Her Interactive Technical Support. Error: Access to the path ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\Nancy Drew\Nancy Drew Central\installed.xml’ is denied”…

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hello Brendon! We have found three emails from you that came in the weekend and will reply shortly. We have alerted our tech support to keep an eye out for emails in case we missed any. Our team is in the office Monday-Friday and do not regularly answer emails over the weekend. Thank you for your patience! (And be sure to include techsupport@herinteractive.com to your contacts list so our replies do not go to the junk folder. Thank you!)

  64. Alem says:

Actually, all pc games are for windows 10 and other OS-es in Compatibility tab, you’ll need to change into the ”Windows XP Service Pack 3” option…

  65. Katie says:

I followed the instructions and was able to successfully able to install Danger on Deception Island and play the whole games with no problems, but I am unable to open Stay Tuned for Danger. I have followed the instructions for installation, but it won’t open. I also noticed during instillation that I had no option for DirectX. I purchased both of these games from this website. I absolutely adore ND games. STFD is the only ND game I haven’t played yet. What else can I try?

  66. Carolina Visscher says:

I have emailed many times, bought the download for castle Malloy 3 times and still not working and no replies to help. Getting pretty upset here..

  67. KitterValt says:

For folks on Windows 10 still having trouble getting the older games like Message in a Haunted Mansion to play, its not enough to run it in compatibility mode Windows 98/Me
    (I wish I could show a screenshot)

While still in the compatibility tab in properties you should also

-Check the Reduced color mode box and scroll the select bar for 16-Bit usually, its in the game requirements

-Then check the Run in 640×480 resolution box just under the Reduced color mode scroll bar

To be safe I also have Run as Admin checked as well.

  68. Dennis Costa says:

My daughter just purchased Nancy Drew Midnight in Salem and installed it on her laptop (i7, Win 10) and it keeps freezing immediately after the intro and will go no further with no reponse to the mouse. Frustrated, she purchased a digital version, installed it and same thing. What, do you think, is the deal? Thank you for any help you can offer.

  69. Cecilia Dominguez says:

Hello, I tried to download my old two-part disk Legend of the Crystal Skull on windows 10 on a HP Spectre but when I put the first disk, it usually downloads up to the point that game number 8 the haunted carousel shows up but then it stops and it says “Error Data 2 could not be opened”. I’m unsure of what to do or how to get the game to installed.

  70. Michelle says:

When it gets to the install page I am unable to access the button that says next everytime

  73. Chloe Grubb says:

Hi all, I’m trying to setup one of my favorite nancy drew games on my windows 10 computer. I keep running into the error code “ND-12126: The installation of DirectX included with this game has failed. Please uninstall and reinstall the game to fix this problem.” I’ve followed those instructions, but I keep running into the same error and there’s no pathway on the current set-up to install without directx. The specific game is Nancy Drew Shadow at the Water’s Edge and I bought a pc download off of AmazonGames. Any advice?

    • Little Jackalope says:

Hi Chloe! Double-check all of your computer system specification against the game requirements, and then if it looks like it should run, contact us at techsupport@herinteractive.com with this problem and we can help you out with the DirectX issue.

    • Cheeto Puff says:

I’m having the exact same problem right now. Did you ever get it figured out? If so, what was the solution?

  74. Contractions of Fate says:

I have the original Baldur’s Game disks from the 1990s, not any remake, not the Enhanced Edition, the original disks, around 1997. The game worked fine in Win 95, 98 and XP. I don’t recall if I have played it since 2012 when I got Win 7. Now I have Win 10 Education.

But when I try to install, the graphic pops up and the music plays, but when I click install, nothing happens. Not even an error message.

I copied all 6 disks, 5 for BG-TSC and 1 for BG-SoA onto my hard drive and they all copied over into separate directories, so the CDs are not damaged.

I used to be able to play the the original Daggerfall by copying the entire disk onto C:\ and making a virtual drive to function as a pretend DVD drive and install from there, but I have no idea how to do this for Baldur’s Gate. And the method for Daggerfall was done for me, anyway! And is also needed DosBox.

Any ideas? I’d be enormously grateful, as I don’t see the need to pay £45 for the enhanced edition on Steam when I already have all the original disks for BG1 and 2, plus all the expansions.

    Many Thanks

  75. Effortless setup, even for non-techies.
