What A Comeback!

HeR Interactive is back and better than ever with Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Seven Keys. I bought this game the day it was released and then spent the next 10+ hours playing until I finished it. There are many, many amazing things to highlight about this game. First, the setting and overall ambiance are absolutely beautiful. There is so much detail put into the interior sets and the music score really pays homage to earlier, classic games. I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of locations that are available to explore, fans will not be disappointed by where their sleuthing will take them. Another highlight is the story itself - a combination of rich, ancient history with modern, technology-based issues. The team blended them together seamlessly, adding layers of depth to the mystery. Furthermore, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the great cast of characters. They are all so beautifully designed, their mouths match up perfectly with their dialogue, and they are all organically introduced into the game so that nothing feels forced or thrown in. There are nine characters to interact with in person, but Nancy also has many other phone contacts (that you can both text AND call!), which just makes the game feel so well-rounded. And finally, I absolutely need to touch on the puzzles of this game as there are just so many and so many different kinds at that! Some puzzles made me feel smart for figuring them out on my own, and other puzzles stumped me to the point of needing a hint, which made me really appreciate how Nancy's task list is laid out in this game, with both tasks and sub-tasks. Overall you can tell just how much time and effort was spent towards the creation of this game. You can feel the passion behind the game and the team's endeavors to incorporate beloved elements from older games and bring them into the modern world of gaming. I have played every game in the series multiple times and I am already itching to replay this one and try for more achievements. I am also already hoping that there will be even more to come for this series... fingers crossed.

Great Step In The Right Direction!

So where to start... I am a long time Nancy Drew fan and have played most of games multiple times. I started Nancy Drew with the haunted mansion when I was about 8 and now I'm 31, I've loved most of them ever since (except for RAN, MID & MED). I was disappointed as most of us were with Midnight in Salem but stayed optimistic all these years hoping for another game. Well now it's here, I bought and downloaded instantly and plan on buying the physical copy as well. I just started playing but what I can say so far is I LOVE IT! The graphics and characters are definitely improved over MID but even more is the feeling of warmth the game has. Also the story is more compelling and the content so far is great... From the coffee shop (making lattes) to the architecture and the Marinette show. I'm really impressed so far... Haven't beat it yet but enjoying every minute. It's not the old games but that's okay the HER team has really delivered on a fresh modern Nancy Drew of the future. Oh and the new voice has grown on me a lot and has been working on her craft. I'm excited for the future of Nancy Drew. Thank you her for 25 years of amazing games!

This Was Worth The Wait!

I love this game! I just finished it this morning. Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Seven Keys is among the best in the series and is definitely a must-have for any fan of this amazing franchise.

The Great Return!

This beautiful game has restored my faith in HER Interactive! The smooth graphics, engaging soundtrack, interesting characters, and detailed story of this game were worth waiting for. I LOVE the fact that I can choose to play the traditional point-and-click or the modern free movement style and that I can switch back and forth mid game. I ultimately preferred playing modern mode, but I like the ability to go back to the beloved classic play mode.
As a long time Nancy Drew fan, I was very excited to see and hear the MANY references to games from the past.
The new Second Chance screen art is beautiful. It is fun and playful - just a work of art that I wasn't expecting! The animations in the cut scenes look very natural. I was especially impressed with one character, who slid their hand on the edge of a counter as they round a corner - it looked so realistic!
This game made me feel all the emotions I used to expect from a Nancy Drew adventure. HER Interactive is back and I can't wait to see what they give us next!

I've been waiting a long time for this installment of the series. I was disappointed by the last game, but I feel KEY is more of a return to form. I liked interacting with the characters and the controls were smoother to work with.

LOVE IT!!!

I have played all of the Nancy Drew games...I was nervous from the last gameplay about how this game would go but I was SO happy to find how easy and how far the program has come along!!! This is doing great things for these games and I absolutely loved the controls and all! Much easier than classic and more realistic!! Amazing story line and education!!!! Just love it!!! The only con would be that there can't come another one quick enough! I hope you guys continue these games regularly from now on, but please don't make us wait long! 🙂

This game was an incredible improvement in animation and character development. There were a million puzzles honestly, VERY complicated ones, maybe add a few simpler ones. But over all a very well thought out game that was extremely fun. It was a wonderful comeback game after so long without any new releases. The only things I noticed were a few technical issues, sometimes the dialogue is really slow, the transition sequence is very slow which can be annoying. At first it didn't let me choose click and point and the coffee puzzle was glitching so I turned all the performance/video quality settings way down, that did the trick. Lastly, some of the objects in the game are really tiny and almost impossible to see on a 13" screen at full brightness. The backpack of her contents is also way too small and hard to see what you need. However, I loved that the game fits my entire screen now instead of the little box in the older ones. Anyway, besides minor things like that the story was very intricate compared to the older ones and fun to play.

amazing! a couple suggestions though

this game was great. i am so glad that it finally came out after years of waiting! i really hope it doesnt take this long for another game though. the story was good (although there were a few plot holes haha), the environments were GORGEOUS, and the music is so good. i dont want to be super critical but if there is hope of making the next game better then i will be a little bit. the puzzles were good, but they all seemed to be the really difficult ending puzzle of the older games. i had to use so many hints, and also many solutions. many times the hints werent even what i needed but maybe that was just me. the animations were great for recently switching to unity and still figuring things out. the plot twists were good and i loved that there were multiple movement systems! the transition between music tracks when going between different areas could be smoother but thats just something small. overall the game was great and i definitely would recommend it. thank you her interactive for this great game and i hope you will continue making more!

Better than MID, still very mid

Overall, the game had the right ingredients: lots of characters, cool topics to investigate, more puzzles than the last game, really exciting plot moments--but in the end Keys wasn't much less of a fumble for me than Midnight in Salem.

The game controls, though offered in both modern and classic mode, are more of a hindrance than a benefit. It's been repeated from Her and from the fanbase that the creators of the old game engine (prior to MID) are no longer with the company, but to me it seems the new engine is more complicated than the old with none of the charm. The open world format is doing too much and delivering a world that somehow manages to look less convincing than the even the early game environments in Message in a Haunted Mansion or Secrets Can Kill. It was so frustrating to discover a new space in the game only to realize we could barely explore or interact with anything at all (computer store, lab, antique shop, coffee shop--why can't Nancy eat one of those 50 cakes on the tables??), and handling objects we could pick up in 3D was probably more trouble to program than it was adding value to the game. The puzzles were hard in a way that felt impossible to figure out and sometimes glitchy (are we supposed to be able to read those TINY dates on that replica clock puzzle in the cafe??)

There has been a lot said about the voice acting, so I really am not intending to be mean when I say that the actress who voiced Nancy was a major barrier to my enjoyment of the game. Brittany's voice would be perfectly suited to a smooth podcast or a morning news show, but if you're going to replace the icon that is Lani Minella, you have to swing for a bigger personality-- Nancy is a Sassy Detective after all!!

Spoilers below*****

Overall we loved *the idea* of being chased through tunnels by a skeleton, being poisoned by the villain and having to prepare an antidote, having to find a professor who was kidnapped, working in a coffee shop etc. But that latte art puzzle was horrific to do, and the alchemy lab and coffee mechanics lacked every bit of the fun and easy mechanics of the food puzzles in WAV and Castle Malloy. We found it frustrating that some of the puzzles required asking for a hint from Ned and from Patricie in order to solve, especially when hints were optional in other games. Finally unfortunately the Midnight in Salem trope of ending with a ten minute monolog explaining the villain carried through into this game. This was forgivable with Secrets Can Kill or even Stay Tuned for Danger because those were early days, but it's game 34 and I think we can do better.

A big improvement from MID!

More than four years after the release of Midnight in Salem, the next Nancy Drew game is here! However, I have mixed thoughts. To start with the positives, the graphics and character animations are definitely improvements from Midnight Salem. I also love the setting of Prague and the story, and I love that there are puzzles throughout the game, unlike Midnight in Salem, where most puzzles are near the end. I also like that you can choose between point-and-click or free-roam movement. Now for the negatives. With point-and-click, the movement is clunky, and it can be hard to see specific items or even leave the area. Even though the graphics are better, the background characters are not that great and there are instances where the background characters are repeated throughout the scenes. Also, I felt like some of the puzzles were not that clear on how to solve or even get started with them. Lastly, the inventory system could be improved. The inventory items are in a small bar at the bottom of the screen, and it is difficult to scroll and even read what the items are. With all that said, Mystery of the Seven Keys is not one of the best Nancy Drew games, but it is not one of the worst, either.

There's Potential...

The last time I played an ND Game was Sea of Darkness. To compare Keys to Sea wouldn't be fair as they are two different games. That being said, I preferred SEA to KEYS in every aspect. Less is more. The point and click style was perfected in the older games, this game feels too big. The open world concept is great! I wanted to like it but I'm someone one who looks for the details. The open world in this game was EMPTY. Reused NPCS in the same location, no dialogue even though the NPC looked like they were talking.

Textures were all over the place. I thought my settings were wrong before I realized that's just the game. Only important parts were in focus and the others weren't (I'm talking about the bookcase)

The voice acting seemed directionless. The one who voices ND reminded me of "SIRI" and took me out of the experience. Something phone calls had a tone to them where the cast recored separately and they weren't given direction to how to adjust their tone to match the other person on the subject being talked about.

I believe, this game is a step in the right direction but it needs more refining. Quality over quantity.

Now to end this on a positive. The game really makes you want to explore, the visuals (the ones with detail) look amazing and it makes the player want to go over to the area to check it out. The character models look great too.

Going forward I'd like to see the games pull it in more. Tighten up the details. If you can't fill an open world game with unique details/NPCs then don't make it open world.

A remake of the older/classic games would be AMAZING!! Imagine making TRT or Ghost Dogs open world. I'd love it!

I have been playing ND games since childhood and still love the series. Mystery of the 7 keys was definitely an improvement from MIS. I really enjoyed the ending sequence and the story in general. The puzzles were good as well but aspects of them were really hard. I would have loved to be able to use the traditional controls but it was SO clunky I had to use the modern controls. The modern controls worked fine but it didn't feel like a Nancy Drew game. I had some trouble getting events to trigger (I knew what to do but just had to talk to someone/do something to be able to do that thing) which made it feel a little disjointed. Overall, I'm excited to see where the games go from here. I would love for games in the future to feel a little more like Nancy Drew

games rather than a mystery game you could put any character on. Bringing back elements like her desk at the beginning would be nice along with showing Nancy's personality again.

Great Comeback

Our family has been playing the Nancy Drew games for 20 years (since I was 7 years old). We love the old games and have played every one of them multiple times. We were excited to see the new games and were also dissapointed by Midnight in Salem. This game did not dissapoint with great puzzles and storyline. We love the new animation and while the new style of movement took some getting use to, we grew to like it.
Our only feedback would be that there are a lot of long pauses while talking (in general the speed of speech is too slow) and some of the puzzles require precision that is a bit too finicky (for example the late making, the gem tool).

It's alright

This game is far better than Midnight in Salem, though in my opinion that wasn't hard to do. If I don't think about this game as a Nancy Drew game then it's fine. Nothing particularly special, but may replay in the future. But knowing it's a part of the Nancy Drew games that we know and love, it's a huge disappointment. I really wanted to love this game. But it's just not on par with HERinteractive's original work. Wish they would go back to the old style, plots, and puzzles.
