CASE CLOSED ON NANCY DREW!
Supreme Court Justices Decree Nancy Drew a Positive Role Model As Her Interactive Continues Tremendous Legacy With Its Video Games
Bellevue, WA, June 4, 2009 – One of the most inspirational and transformative characters ever created, Nancy Drew, is again making headlines as a result of recent US Supreme Court nominee, Hon. Sonia Sotomayor, who cited the character as being a motivating and positive influence on her when she was younger. Judge Sotomayor joins retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and current Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg as part of a large group of successful women who were all inspired by the Nancy Drew character.
Today’s modern day equivalent are the Nancy Drew video games from Her Interactive which have carried on the legacy, and in fact are so popular, that they have been the #1 selling PC adventure game series in the U.S. for the past five years*.
But how does a series of games aimed at such a non-traditional audience like girls grow to become #1 amongst a multitude of slicker, more hyped video games? A recent survey of nearly 850 members of the Nancy Drew community on Her Interactive’s website revealed some remarkable insights:
- 83% tell their friends about the latest Nancy Drew games so the word is quickly spread from peer-to-peer;
- 73% said they admire Nancy Drew because she is smart, resourceful and independent, a theme that runs across generations;
- 44.4% said they enjoy the interactive nature of the Nancy Drew games, which allows them to control their own destiny.
It is a contemporary message of empowerment, all of which is no surprise to Megan Gaiser, CEO and President of Her Interactive, and a former filmmaker whose vision has established Nancy Drew with a new tech-savvy audience: “When we started making Nancy Drew games, everyone thought girls were computer phobic, however we thought otherwise and today our games are played by women of all ages. We are thrilled that such distinguished and real-life role models as Supreme Court justices are able to draw from their Nancy Drew experiences, and look forward to continuing the tradition with our games.”
Her Interactive was established in 1995 with the goal of designing, developing and marketing thrilling interactive mystery adventure games for girls of all ages. With the Nancy Drew license, Her Interactive was able to develop an award-winning line of PC games that focus on the modern adventures of Nancy Drew as she solves globe trotting mysteries. To date Her Interactive has sold over six million units of their PC series, developed games for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, and most recently, has created a new casual series called Nancy Drew Dossier.
