March Newsletter Addendum

After I sent out the March newsletter, Mark, one of our artists emailed me to set the record straight about how art is REALLY created. The artists use a lot more than just Photoshop for their work. What he told me was great information for anyone interested in becoming a graphics artists in the entertainment industry - I had to share it with you guys!

"PhotoShop is just half of the software we use. Since PhotoShop doesn’t create the 3D graphics, we use a program called 3D Studio Max from a company called Autodesk. The other half of our art team uses this software. PhotoShop is only used to create materials and do touch ups. That is a big task but it is only half of what we do.

If I had to put it in terms of the article I would say “our 2D artists come up with a flat sketch based on the designer’s idea. Then the 3D artists translate that to 3D and it looks a bit like an uncolored page in a coloring book. The 3D and 2D artists work together to fill in the colors and textures”.
There is even a 3rd branch of the art team, “animation” that uses 3D Studio Max to bring our characters and scenes together. "

You learn new things every day. Today is no exception for me.

P.S. Ayu - thanks for the Lobby sketch in the newsletter!
