Beauty is Truth

Why is our definiton of beauty defined by the media? In the fashion world, the models are so thin - it's almost unhealthy. And yet, when we show a plus sized model, no one thinks she's a model. She's too chunky and eats! We wanted to make a statement against what is typical in fashion and pay homage to what real women are like.

We create girls in our games that are smart and daring. Afterall, this is Nancy Drew - the first female action hero! Nancy Drew is about having the power to do anything you want. She's almost pefect, fashionable, smart, adventurous, and handy all at once. You can be too! Nancy's not just about games; she's also a role model for girls and an attestant to their abilities.

JJ is an exotic plus sized model - and I love her that way. From her funny Australian accent to her penchent for hangman, she's enduring and heartwarming. She doesn't have to be skinny to be pretty and neither should you. Spread your wings and achieve your dreams.

I really didn't consider these issues when creating the characters for DAN. I just wanted to make memorable characters that are intriguing and different. If the characters were stereotypes that we all know, they'd quickly become boring.

For Minette, designing for plus-sized women isn't about making a 'statement', but is just an aesthetic that she finds appealing. And JJ is the type of model who can provide the inspiration for creating that look.

Also, JJ isn't all that heartwarming - she does have a 'dark' side, just like everyone else.

One thing that I really enjoy in ND games is exploring issues in greater depth. Having a designer who prefers curves over angles will hopefully make people realize that the fashion world is much more complex and rich than we think.
