Interview with Character Animator, Scott

Her Interactive: How long have you worked at Her Interactive?

Scott: I started here right as “Shadow at the Water’s Edge” was wrapping up. My first full game was “The Captive Curse,” so…  2 years in August.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite part about animating?

Scott: I think I gravitated to animation because it’s a lot like playing with an action figure. I like posing the characters in interesting ways. It’s like what I did as a kid with Ninja Turtle toys, only now I can hit the playback button and they actually move.

Her Interactive: Who has been your favorite character to work on?

Scott: So far, I’d have to say Bess, who I worked on in Alibi in Ashes. The character model and voice work were great as a starting point, and she’s just a little on the crazy side, which is fun.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite movie?

Scott: I’m partial to the cartoons. Iron Giant has been my favorite for a long time.

Her Interactive: What kind of music do you listen to?

Scott: I’m not picky about it, I mostly have KEXP on in the background. Some bands I like are Metric, The Police, Washed Out, and Gorillaz (animators tend to like that band).

Her Interactive: If you were a character in a comic, who would you be and what is your story?

Scott: I draw comics in my spare time, so it would probably be a comic about a guy drawing comics. The first panel would be me chuckling at my own joke, and the last panel would be me checking for new likes on Facebook…

Her Interactive: Is there a character (genre/style, or specific person) that you would like to design in the future?

Scott: I’m always doodling characters on any available piece of paper, so that’s a good question. A cartoon monster of some kind, I think.  Like a Pokemon or something from Adventure Time.

Her Interactive: If confronted with one of the following options, which would you choose?

A) Expose and catch a criminal

B) Sleep in a haunted place

C) Hunt for treasure in a dangerous location

Scott: Okay, so I feel like catching the criminal is probably an important thing to do… what with crime being a bad thing and all… but I really can’t pass up that treasure one. I like treasure.

Thanks Scott for bringing our characters to life! We look forward to seeing the characters you are working on now!

Interview with Lead Tester, Jeanne!

We interviewed our Lead Tester, Jeanne!

Her Interactive: What do you do as Lead Tester?

Jeanne: In a nutshell, it’s my job to make sure when someone plays their game; the only thing they focus on is solving the mystery. To help make that happen, the test team analyzes everything that impacts game play – art, sound, design, install, story, character, logic, navigation, compatibility and puzzles, just to name a few. I also participate in design walkthroughs where I gleefully try to be as difficult as possible to catch early logic and motivation issues, create test plans and test cases, hire and work with talented testers, and spend a ton of time in the game finding, reporting and regressing bugs.

Her Interactive: What do you do in your spare time? Any hobbies?

Jeanne: Travel and birding. Using birding as an excuse to visit places I want to see. Traveling to see new birds. It’s nicely symbiotic.

Her Interactive: If you could have a super power or super skill, what would it be and why?

Jeanne: Telekinesis, no doubt about it. There’s even flying potential if you’re clever enough.

Her Interactive: If you received an anonymous threatening note after exploring a suspicious location, what would be your first reaction?

Jeanne: Well, that depends. Is anyone else around? When did I receive the note? Am I still on site? Did I make it home first? Is the note hand written? Typed? Collaged? Does it address me by name or was it intended for someone else? What’s the threat level? Severe? Mild? Laughable? The tester in me just can’t answer definitively without pushing back for variables.

Her Interactive:  Name one memorable bug you found in Tomb of the Lost Queen.

Jeanne: This bug was actually found by one of our testers, but it’s definitely the most memorable bug for me, even if it wasn’t a show stopper: Dylan has no leg hair. Such a short description, but so vivid and trust me, once it was pointed out, it was all I could see every time I spoke with Dylan. Fortunately our art team was able to get this fixed so Dylan appears nice and rugged in the game.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite kind of puzzle or challenge in-game?

Jeanne: Give me a logic puzzle any day. I’d argue that testing is one big logic puzzle, which suits me just fine.

Her Interactive: If confronted with one of the following options, which would you choose?

A) Expose and catch a criminal

B) Sleep in a haunted place

C) Hunt for treasure in a dangerous location

Jeanne: It’s absolutely C) Hunt for treasure in a dangerous an exotic location. I’m always looking for travel opportunities.

Her Interactive: Which Nancy Drew game character would you say you are most like?

Jeanne: I’m going with George. She’s intelligent, independent, creative, resourceful and loyal. Those are all traits I hope people use to describe me someday.

Her Interactive: Do you like Easter Eggs and enjoy putting them in fellow team mates’ drawers?

Jeanne: For the record, I’ve been exonerated of this crime. It’s also too understated for me. I’m more of a ‘leave a clue in the drawer to draw the victim away from her desk on a prolonged scavenger hunt, ultimately leading back to her desk which is now filled floor to ceiling with Easter Egg grass and plastic eggs which all need gathered and cracked open to expose a multitude of tiny jackalope figurines you must painstakingly piece together in order to reveal the final solution’ kind of girl. You just remember that…

Her Interactive: What is your favorite TV show?

Jeanne: Firefly. Though it’s been said before, there is no other answer here (Tim and I utterly agree on this).

Her Interactive:  What is your favorite movie?

Jeanne: Firefly. Oh wait, this is the favorite movie question, not TV. Sorry, I meant to say Firefly.

Her Interactive:  How come you are so adverse to texting?

Jeanne: B/C @TEOTD I prefer to be AFK, or SLT. Besides, I can’t read any of it without a translator.

Thanks Jeanne for all your hard work!

Interview with Programmer Lead, Peter!

We interviewed our Programmer Lead, Peter!

Her Interactive: How long have you worked at Her Interactive?

Peter: I’ve worked here just over 6 years.

Her Interactive: What are you currently working on?

Peter: I am working on an internal tool to help our designers. Currently, they forge the logic of the game out of sheer will and brainpower. If all goes well, they will have some support in their quest. I call this tool “Brain.”

Her Interactive: Do you have a favorite saying or quote?

Peter: Yes.

Her Interactive: And what is your favorite quote?

Peter: Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. -2 Timothy 2:15

Her Interactive: If you could invent a gadget or machine, what would it be called and what would it do?

Peter: The gadget would make the consequence of a stupid action immediate so that practitioners of stupidity would associate bad results with stupid actions. I have no name for this gadget, and I clearly should not be allowed to invent things.

Her Interactive: If you were the main character of a video game, who would you be and what is your story or mission?

Peter: I would be Indiana Jones as he’s one of the few heroes whose life pattern is not ultimately self-destructive. My mission would be to recover lost artifacts, defeat the Nazis, have an awesome soundtrack and, of course, run away from snakes.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite Ice Cream Flavor? Either in real life or from the ice cream parlor in Alibi in Ashes?

Peter: I am partial to mint chocolate chip and to vanilla bean. But not together.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite movie?

Peter: I only get one? That’s so mean of you. Just for that, I’m going to pick “Mean Girls.” Know why? Because you’re a mean girl. See the connection? I want people to know how, like, smart I can be, and stuff.

Her Interactive: If confronted with one of the following options, which would you choose?

A) Expose and catch a criminal

B) Sleep in a haunted place

C) Hunt for treasure in a dangerous location

Peter: Clearly (A). (B) is impossible because you cannot sleep if you’re creeped out; (B) is a trap. (C) is just asking for bodily damage, and that will never be on my bucket list. (A), by process of elimination, is the only viable answer.

Thanks Peter for helping to put our games together and all of your hard work!

Interview with Creative Director, Tim

We interviewed our Creative Director, Tim, who designed the new User Interface for Tomb of the Lost Queen!

Her Interactive: How long have you worked at Her Interactive?

Tim: About 14 ½ years.  Probably longer than some of our players have been alive…gulp.

Her Interactive: How did you get into the game industry?

Tim: I went back to school to get a degree in Computer Animation and got my first job as an artist at, yes, Her Interactive.  And they haven’t been able to get rid of me since!

Her Interactive: How instrumental were you in creating the new UI?  How would you describe the process?

Tim: I was responsible for designing the look and feel of the UI and defining its behavior, but I got a lot of invaluable feedback along the way that brought it to where it is now.  It was certainly a collaborative process.  I would come up with a concept with several variations based on a lot of reference images that were used to draw inspiration from, and then a group of us would look at it and discuss what we liked and what we would like to see changed or added.  I’d take that feedback and go back and make changes and then present it again for further feedback.  It evolved a lot through that back and forth process.

Tomb of the Lost Queen UI Main Menu

Her Interactive:  Why will fans of Nancy Drew games love the new UI?

Tim: It’s pretty to look at and is very easy to use.  All the things that you use most in the game are right in front of you.

Her Interactive:  What’s your favorite part of the new UI?

Tim: I really like how the expandable task list/journal turned out.  And the new auto-sorting task list is a nice addition.

Tomb of the Lost Queen Taskbar and Checklist

Her Interactive: Will fans of Nancy Drew games notice the higher resolution graphics used in TMB?

Tim: I think so.  I pulled up a screen shot from one of our first games and was shocked to see how small the game screen was compared to TMB.  You can really appreciate all the detail our artists put into these scenes now.

Original Secrets Can Kill Resolution

Tomb of the Lost Queen UI New Resolution

Her Interactive:  What are you working on next that we should know about?

Tim: I’m helping to build out one of the environments for our next game.  It’s been fun getting to do some 3d modeling again – I haven’t had a chance to do much of that in a while and although I’m a bit rusty, I’m enjoying it!

Her Interactive: If you were the main character of a video game, who would you be and what is your story or mission?

Tim: I would be a young man fighting against an evil tyrant, up against seemingly insurmountable odds using only his wits, his courage and his very life if necessary to save the one he loves.  Either that or a Minecraft dude building all sorts of cool stuff!

Her Interactive: If you could travel to any place, either real or fictional, where would it be? What would you do there?

Tim: Heaven.  Hang out with Jesus and ask a lot of questions.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite movie?

Tim: Oh, so many good ones… I’ll say the Lord of the Rings trilogy off the top of my head.  Epic.

Her Interactive:  What is your favorite TV show?

Tim: Firefly.  Hands down the best TV show ever created.  Why FOX!  Why did you have to cancel it! :(

Her Interactive:  Last question, what is your favorite video game of all time?

Tim: Ultima VII.  I have fond memories of spending waaay too much time playing this game.  I realized that I needed a break from it when I was driving down the road one day and saw a dead animal on the side of the road and my first instinct was to double click on it to see what I could loot from it.  :)

Thank you Tim for creating a new and beautiful User Interface and for all the hard work you put into making these games!

Interview with 3D Artist, Josh

We interviewed one of our awesome 3D artists, Josh!

Her Interactive: How long have you worked at Her Interactive?

Josh: It will be 6 years this July.

Her Interactive: How did you get into the game industry?

Josh: I’ve had a game system in my home since I can remember, so it’s always been an interest of mine. I took every chance I had to work around games. The art aspect always interested me the most, and I loved drawing, so when I had the chance, I decided to move out West and go to art school. After graduating, a friend of mine told me about a possible 3 month contract at Her Interactive for localization. I jumped at the chance to finally work at a video game company, and one thing lead to another. So after the contract, I stuck around!

Her Interactive: What was your favorite environment to work on?

Josh: The courtyard in The Captive Curse is one of my favorites. I just really liked the setting - nice and moody. At least, I hope it turned out that way!

Her Interactive: Is there an environment you’d like to create in the future?

Josh: I have always admired the architecture in London, so maybe a London street during the Victorian period.

Her Interactive: Name one environment and/or object you created and tell us a little about it.

Josh: Well I don’t want to say too much about TMB, but I did make the scene that shows up on the title screen that’s been shown. I don’t want to give away anything, but… things happen in there!

TMB Title Screen

Her Interactive: If you were the main character of a video game, who would you be and what is your story or mission?

Josh: I would probably be a Knight, and have to go on a long quest to save the world! That’s what most video game artists do on their off time.

Her Interactive: If you could travel to any place, either real or fictional, where would it be? What would you do there?

Josh: I’d have to go to one of the worlds from a Final Fantasy game. Once there, I would have to learn some magic and try not to set myself on fire.

Her Interactive: What is your favorite movie?

Josh: Transformers: The Movie, the animated one from 1986. I watched it about 200 times as a kid, and will probably never watch another movie that many times. I also have transformers covering my desk here.

Thanks Josh for creating those awesome environments, we are looking forward to seeing all of your work in Tomb of the Lost Queen!

Tomb of the Lost Queen Cover Art

The official box art for Tomb of the Lost Queen is now released! The marketing department and artists have been working hard these past few months to prepare for you this masterpiece. As seen below, we wanted to go for a spooky and beautiful combination. While the bright colors of the queen's attire and makeup draws you to the detail and intricacy of her royal headdress and gazing eyes, the creepy transition to her right side portrays her mummified state. It's almost as if her death calls out to you, beckoning you to learn more about her and her secrets that she has kept hidden for so long, protected by dangerous elements.

TMB Cover Art

The scarab beetle that represented rebirth to the ancient Egyptians crawls along the edge of the coffin near the gold ankh, and the alert Egyptian cobra in the back slithers around the tomb, guarding the queen's final resting place with determination.

Below the title lays the modern-day dig site and encampment. In the middle of the dessert the tomb entrance has been revealed, once buried in sand, now appears ominous and intriguing at the same time. What could be hiding behind the threshold of thousands of years' history? Only the truly brave shall venture into the ground, into the past, and into the dangerous minds of clever royal Egyptians in Tomb of the Lost Queen.

Pre-orders begin April 3rd, 2012.

Official release date is May 8th, 2012.

New User Interface!

Nancy has started many of her cases at her desk, her center of operations, where you get to learn about how to play the game and where you first learn about the mystery. Now, with the release of Tomb of the Lost Queen, we are excited to announce a new UI! Check out the before and after shots between the UI in Alibi in Ashes, and the new UI comparison below.

Old Main Screen:

ASH Main Desk

Here is Nancy's Center of operations. How many times have you heard her say that? To begin your game, you had to click on the plane ticket or clue to start your case. Your inventory is accessed by clicking on the brown bag at the far left bottom of your screen, which is next to the journal. Your task list (if you play Junior Level) is in between the journal and your cell phone. Nancy's words (when she's talking to herself or when sound effects are shown) are displayed in the center on the black background. The black background completely surrounds the game play screen. On the bottom right you can find the Options button, the Load game, Save game, and Exit button. Have you ever accidently hit quit before saving?

New Main Screen:

TMB Main Screen

Here is the new main screen that you first arrive at! To show off a cool screenshot, we filled in the screen space, so that there is no black surrounding all sides except for the base where we introduce you to your options. It is more clear and simple to read and understand the game options since they are now in written form, rather than images you need to hover over.

Old Difficulty Screen:

ASH Game Difficulty

Once you clicked on your ticket, or clue in Alibi in Ashes, you are presented with the option of game play level. The police badges display Junior or Senior level.

New Difficulty Screen:

TMB Difficulty

In Tomb of the Lost Queen, once you click on "New Game" you are taken to the game difficulty options. You have a pair of magnifying glasses to choose from: Junior Level will now be "Amateur Sleuth", after all that is what Nancy calls herself often, and Senior Detective will now be "Master Sleuth." The differences are listed in the charts seen in the image above.

Old Options Menu:

Remember the options menu (clicking on the gear icon) in Alibi in Ashes?

ASH Options

New Options Screen:

TMB Options Menu

We have made a new menu bar where you can find all the buttons you need! By clicking on the magnifying glass "Menu" at the bottom left of your screen, you can save, load, exit, get help, adjust your options, and return to the main menu. No more accidently hitting the "Exit" button!

This new wood grain tool bar at the base of your screen displays, of course, the magnifying glass Menu button, then your cell phone on the left. In the center is your quick and easy-to-access inventory, where you can slide back and forth to see everything you have collected. Above your inventory is a black bar where you can read sound effects and Nancy's words when she talks to herself. To the right on the tool bar is your journal and task list, which rolls upwards for a better view, and then tucks back into the tool bar when you are finished. The task list has a special feature: when you check off a task, the finished tasks gravitates to the bottom, making room for the remaining tasks you have yet to complete at the top.

How do you like the new user interface? Stay tuned for the release of Tomb of the Lost Queen to experience this new update yourself! Happy Sleuthing!

Rachel -- Rest in Peace

Her Interactive has lost a huge Nancy Drew fan in Rachel Vaughn. Today, Rachel passed away at 17 due to Kidney Cancer. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we were able to meet Rachel and make some of her wishes come true. Tomb of the Lost Queen will be dedicated to Rachel and you will see pictures of her in the game. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.
